Excess RTV Sealant → Oil Starvation
The silent engine killer on FA24 builds
Subaru used liberal RTV on FA24 oil pans/timing covers. Loose chunks can clog the pickup screen, starving the engine at high RPM. Multiple 2022 WRX owners documented low-oil warnings within 20k miles and NHTSA filings cite "practically dry" dipsticks right after dealer service.
CarComplaints owner statements (Nov 25 2023); The Autopian investigation (Nov 7 2025).
How to confirm
- Pull the dipstick every fuel stop; look for rubbery specks.
- After an oil change, cut open the cartridge filter and inspect the media.
- During any exhaust work, drop the oil pan (requires header removal) and visually inspect the pickup screen facets.
Fix path
labor
3–4 hours DIY (exhaust removal) or $550–$900 shop time.
parts
OEM ThreeBond/Permatex, pan gasket kit, fresh oil + filter.
process
Clean pan, reapply a 2–3 mm bead of sealant, torque per FSM, let cure 24h.
Preventive Cadence
- Document with photos and log mileage so recurring issues can be escalated to Subaru.
- Pair with oil analysis every 10k miles if you're tracking or tuned.
